YOUR NURSING ROADMAP — JULY 20, 2026

Registering for your next prerequisite? The course you choose can decide how many nursing programs you qualify for.

One prerequisite slot, two course options: Cultural Anthropology meets 4 of 5 programs, Introduction to Sociology meets 5 of 5.

PREREQUISITE PLANNING

Choosing the Right Prerequisite Could Qualify You for More Nursing Programs

One of the most common mistakes we see is students registering for a prerequisite without first looking at the nursing programs they plan to apply to.

Some California ADN programs give you more than one way to meet a prerequisite.

For example, a program may accept:

  • Cultural Anthropology or Introduction to Sociology
  • Introduction to Public Speaking or Group Discussion

Let's say you're interested in five nursing programs.

Four of them accept either Cultural Anthropology or Introduction to Sociology, but one only accepts Introduction to Sociology.

If you choose Introduction to Sociology, you'll meet the prerequisite for all five programs.

If you choose Cultural Anthropology, you may no longer qualify for that one program.

The same concept applies to other prerequisite options. Choosing the course that satisfies the most nursing programs can help keep more opportunities open when it's time to apply.

Before registering for your next prerequisite, compare the admission requirements for the nursing programs you're interested in. Choosing the right course today could qualify you for more nursing programs later.
